THUNDER BAY— With more than $6 million raised nation wide in 2024, the Alzheimer’s Society of Thunder Bay has high expectations high for their annual walk.

This year the local event takes place May 24 at Chapples Park.

“It's very scary to receive that diagnosis and they don't really know where to turn for help but we're here just to answer questions,” said Brandi Moore, marketing and awareness coordinator with the Alzheimer's Society of Thunder Bay.

The society focuses on providing community members living with dementia, support programs and education.

One community member accessing local supports is Moore’s grandmother.

“My grandmother was just diagnosed a couple of years ago, so this holds a very dear place in my heart,” Moore said.

Additional supports for community members with dementia make a huge impact in their day-to-day. These education workshops, dementia friendly communities and preventative brain health

“I think it's really important because my family didn't really know about our services. They're out in the region and without us talking about it and spreading awareness they still wouldn't,” she said.

IG Wealth Management is a sponsor of this year's walk and regional vice-president Michael Nitz said they are walking to share hope with those living with dementia and their caregivers.

“This walk is a major fundraiser to ensure that families and those living with dementia have the support programs, and education there to help them,” Nitz said.

Community members are encouraged to come out and support friends and family members living with dementia.
