THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is reporting another fatality related to COVID-19.

It means the virus has now claimed the lives of 28 residents of the city and district.

The TBDHU also reports 46 new COVID-19 cases today, the second highest single-day total since the pandemic was declared.

Thirty-one of the new cases are the result of close contact with infected individuals, one is part of the Chartwell Hilldale retirement home outbreak, three have no known exposure, and 11 are listed as pending.

All but five of the cases are in the City of Thunder Bay or immediate surrounding townships.

Three cases are in First Nations communities, and two are in other district communities.

According to TBDHU data, 16 people remain in hospital for treatment, but the number of patients in the ICU has risen to six, two more than on Tuesday.

TBDHU statistics do not include any hospital patients who are from outside the District of Thunder Bay.

With 14 cases resolved since Tuesday's report, the number of active cases in the district has passed the 300 mark for the first time, standing at 304.

NOTE:  The original version of this story has been updated to reflect the fact that the 46 cases reported Wednesday is the second largest single-day total to date. On Jan. 21, 56 new cases were reported by the TBDHU.
