THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is reporting the death of another area resident from COVID-19.

The death disclosed in TBDHU's COVID-19 dashboard on Wednesday is the 74th since the pandemic began in March 2020.

The health unit also reported 143 new positive test results since Monday.

It said the active case count now stands at 302, compared with 355 on Monday.

According to the dashboard, 44 people are currently in district hospitals receiving treatment for COVID-19, including 10 in intensive care.

The comparable figures on Monday were 47 and eight respectively.

There was also a slight drop in the COVID-19 positivity test rate.

Between Jan. 16 and 22, it was 20.6 per cent.

From Jan. 9 to 15 it was 23 per cent.

Across the district, there are currently 18 active COVID outbreaks in high-risk settings, compared with 21 on Monday.

The next update will be issued on Friday.

TBDHU continues to remind residents that because PCR testing for the virus is now limited to certain groups, the results significantly under-represent COVID-19 activity in the district.
