City of  Thunder Bay Media Release

December 1, 2016 – A River Street apartment building owner has been charged for failing to install a carbon monoxide alarm as required by the Ontario Fire Code. The ticket carries a fine of $360.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a structural fire at the River Street property on October 29. The laundry room fire was quickly brought under control. A fire investigation by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue revealed there was no carbon monoxide alarm in the service room of the apartment building.

“Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas,” said Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hankkio. “Only a carbon monoxide alarm can alert you to its deadly presence.”

The Ontario Fire Code requires that in condo and apartment buildings that have a service room with a fuel fired appliance, CO alarms must be installed in the service room and outside all sleeping areas of residences above, below and beside the service room.

In condo or apartment buildings that have a parking garage, CO alarms must be installed outside all sleeping areas of residences above, below and beside the parking garage.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue also reminds residents that it is the law to have carbon monoxide alarms outside any sleeping area if your home has a fuel fired appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.
