Apartment unit catches fire

Fire crews managed to limit most of the damage to a single residence at Moodie Street building.

THUNDER BAY -- A Moodie Street apartment unit was heavily damaged early Wednesday when a fire broke inside the unit.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews responded to the call just after 2:30 a.m., a second alarm being called once the first team arrived on the scene. Firefighters used a 45-millimetre hand line from the pumper outside to fight the fire, which was extinguished quickly.

Light smoke was found on the second and third floors of the building, although the fire itself was contained to the original unit.

Fire crews noted most residents of the building heeded the ringing alarms, but a few residents decided to risk it and remain behind in bed, a potentially dangerous situation.
