Archeological study at new courthouse location to conclude soon

The next step in the construction of a new courthouse in Thunder Bay is set to begin sometime before the New Year.

A four-stage archeological study that is taking place on the south side location on Brodie Street and Miles Street will wrap up in the next week or two, said Ontario Realty Corporation’s Caroline Knight. The location of that study is where the city’s new consolidated courthouse will be built.

The study of the area began about a year ago after items from the mid 1800s – including buttons, dishes and bricks – were found on the site. But since then, the archeological study has failed to find anything of significance that would make the location of the new courthouse a historic site.

Infraustructure Ontario is expected to take the site over from the Ontario Realty Corporation and will continue on with the design, build, finance, and maintenance phases of the project, Knight said.
