Area Action Centres to close

The union that represents many of this area’s paper workers is saying goodbye to one of its most powerful resources.

After losing funding from senior levels of government, all three CEP Action Centres are being closed. National representative, Rene Lindquist, says there may be nowhere else for people to turn.

"It’s a sepcialized service that we are providing because it was geared to the worker," Lindquist said. "I don’t know where they are going to go, because we’ve set a standard of one-stop that I don’t think anybody else can do."

The Amber Drive Action Centre will be the first to shutdown at the end of the month. Not long after, the Red Rock location is expected to close.

Finally, the colourful centre on High Street will close its doors at the end of August.
The government cuts that are leading to these closures will have a negative impact on the region’s economy, Lindquist added.

"They are going to invest new money for jobs and skill sets, but how do you get there?" He asked. "You have to use action centre. This action centre and what was developed here by laid-off workers, who know what it is like to be laid off, generated a one-stop shopping centre to assist workers into making that transition."
