A former cabinet minister from Northwestern Ontario will have an area highway renamed in his honour.
The province announced Wednesday that it will rename Highway 664, which runs from Sioux Lookout to Hudson, to honour the late Leo Bernier. The former cabinet minister died in June at the age of 81.
Bernier was often called the emperor of the North, and spent 21 years as the Tory MPP for the Kenora riding. He made his mark as the minister of Natural Resources, and then Mines and Northern Affairs.
Members of Bernier's family were in the public gallery at Queen's Park Wednesday to hear the tributes and applaud the announcement.
