THUNDER BAY -- Students at both the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board and the Lakehead District School Board are lagging behind their provincial compatriots in mathematics.
On Wednesday the Education Quality and Accountability Office released results from 2014 standardized Grade 9 math testing.
The results show that 81 per cent of Catholic school board students are at or above the provincial standard in the academic math program. Eighty-three percent of Lakehead board students hit the mark or bettered it.
That represents a four percentage point drop for the Catholic board over 2013, while the public board was up three percentage points.
Both fell short of the 85 per cent mark achieved across the province.
The Catholic board received slightly better news in the applied mathematics category, where 49 per cent of students met or surpassed the provincial standard, two percentage points above the Ontario average.
Only 43 per cent of public school students hit the mark.
