Area stick factory now opened at “minimal capacity,” worker says

It looks like the struggling Global Sticks operation in Oliver Paipoonge is starting to resume production after several months of downtime.

It looks like the struggling Global Sticks operation in Oliver Paipoonge is starting to resume production after several months of downtime.

The Popsicle stick plant had its grand opening in May of last year, but was forced to close its doors in the fall due to financial difficulties and a lack of birch wood.

Global Sticks president Reggie Nukovic would not comment on the status of the plant today, but promised a news release about the company would be sent to local media in "a few days.”

Around 20 cars were in the parking lot on Thursday, and an employee who spoke to a Thunder Bay Television reporter said the plant is currently in "minimal operation,” as they prepare for an eventual start-up.

Oliver-Paipoonge mayor Lucy Kloosterhuis said the activity began about a month ago, and loads of wood have been delivered to the site recently.

She added that she's encouraged by what she's seeing, and hopes all 80 employees will be back to work in the future.
