For the first time Lakehead University visual arts students have a place to display their art on campus.

Titled The Row, the gallery is located in the hallway containing the university’s senior administration offices above the Agora.

The idea came from LU president Brian Stevenson, who said the artwork, which is also for sale, is in a high-traffic area of the university.

“We’re celebrating our own students, our own talent, right here in the heart of the academic administration of the university,” he said.

“This is a space that is used by top administrators in the university every day,” said visual arts professor Mark Nisenholt. “They are up and down the hallway going to meetings and conferring with each other. For them to see student artwork on a regular basis is a wonderful opportunity for the students.”

Visual arts students haven’t had a prominent place to display their art before on campus, Nisenholt said.

And fourth year student Christina Kehler said it’s an honour to be associated with The Row, adding it’s a great chance for students to show their work outside of the juried show, which happens once a year at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery.

“It’s just an opportunity to show their work and get out there,” Kehler said. “It’s good for the school to actually recognize the visual arts department. I feel like we sort of get forgotten about sometimes.”

The Row is open to all members of the community.
