THUNDER BAY -- Asphalt repairs are underway on Roland Street following some issues within the base lift of the asphalt.

Project engineer Matt Miedema said the roadway, which was laid down a little more than a week ago started to deteriorate shortly after reopening.

Discussion with the contractor revealed a moisture issue as the cause of the problem.

“This time a year there’s a lot more rain,” Miedema said. “The granule material got overly wet, which caused some issues with stability with the road base.”

He added that once the repairs are done, contractors will reply the first lift of asphalt.

“Work is near completion, so once these repairs are done work will finish with a top lift of asphalt, and the road will be fully opened again.”

The repairs began Monday, and Miedema said they should be complete no later than Wednesday at the full expense of the contractor.

Weather permitting, construction on Roland Street from Neebing-McIntyre Floodway to Hewitson Street should be complete by the end of the week.
