THUNDER BAY -- A 24-year-old Thunder Bay man is facing charges after assaulting a security guard and another employee who tried to stop him from stealing a video game console.

Thunder Bay police officers were called to the Arthur Street Walmart location for reports of a theft and an assault on Wednesday morning.

Police said the suspect entered the store and asked staff members to get the console from a locked cabinet. Once the console was taken out, the suspect attempted to leave the store without paying. A security guard confronted the suspect, who attempted to flee. The suspect allegedly struck the security guard and then assaulted another store worker.

The security guard was able to gain control and the first arriving officer took the suspect into custody, police said.

Medical attention was not required for the security guard and the employee.

Alexander Smith Hassell, who was charged with two counts of assault and one count of theft under $5,000, appeared in court on Thursday and is scheduled to be released with a future appearance date.
