ATV Poker Run heading to Kakabeka

The 5 Aces ATV Fall Classic Poker Run is moving from Shuniah to Kakabeka Falls in its third year.

THUNDER BAY - There’s a new route for those looking to tear up the trails this fall.

The 5 Aces ATV Fall Classic Poker Run will begin in Kakabeka Falls where the trails will be a little more adventurous for ATV riders.

Patrick Trevisanutto, managing partner at Half-Way Motors, said the change will feature a little more variety for riders and their families.

“The track we ran in Shuniah was pretty straightforward along the (TransCanada) pipeline, this year there will be some trail riding, some road riding... so there will be a little something for everyone,” Trevisanutto said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The track will also follow designated Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club routes.

The run, which will start at the intersection of Fleming and Stroms Road, includes a number of stops along the trail where riders will pick cards out of a bucket.

Money raised will once again go towards Our Kids Count, a community development program that helps foster the development of children aged six and under, with an emphasis on maintaining food security for families.

“We find Our Kids Count is a grassroots organization in Thunder Bay that is helping everybody locally, the money stays local,” Trevisanutto said. “It helps in the neighborhood and networks of young families that create a sense of community,”

Our Kids Count executive director Gladys Beringer said the charity is struggling to balance the budget in 2019 and is relying on the fundraiser to help with costs.

“We’re finding that we’re running the same number of programs, but our programs are full,” Beringer said. “We may have six people cooking 40 or 50 portions for people, so we need more food going out the door.”

Our Kids Count is hoping to hit the mark of $40,000 for this year’s event.

Entrance will be $50 and includes breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt.

Riders can register at Our Kids Count or at Half-Way Motors Power Sport. The Poker Run will take place on Sept. 7.
