THUNDER BAY – Officials with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit are advising the public not to drink Kakabeka Crystal water products because of evidence pointing to bacterial contamination.

The TBDHU says the type of bacteria has not yet been identified, but noted contamination of water with certain bacteria can lead to gastrointestinal illnesses in humans, which can cause diarrhea and abdominal pain.

At this point in time, there is no evidence in Thunder Bay and district of an increase in gastrointestinal illness.

“Testing of some Kakabeka Crystal water products has shown evidence of significant bacterial overgrowth where none would be expected.”

The Health Unit says public health inspectors have been working closely with the facility and testing at various points in the bottling process.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
