OTTAWA — Tens of thousands of baby safety gates sold across Canada last year have been recalled.

Health Canada says the metal tube on Bily retractable safety gates has a surface coating that contains excessive levels of barium.

The chemical can be toxic at certain levels.

More than 26,000 units were sold between June and December 2019.

The recall involves gates that are white or black and with item numbers BG370018 or BG370220. The manufacturing date code label can be found at the bottom of the gate.

The gates were manufactured in China and distributed by Elfe Juvenile Products.

Consumers are advised to stop using the gates immediately, and contact Elfe for a repair kit.

Health Canada says that as of Jan. 10, 2020, the company had received no report of any consumer incidents or injuries in Canada.
