THUNDER BAY – A well-known local lawyer facing charges of sexual assault will be back in court Tuesday.
Alexander (Sandy) Zaitzeff appeared in-person at the Thunder Bay courthouse Friday for a bail hearing. He was remanded until Tuesday morning, when he is scheduled to reappear in court for a bail hearing.
Zaitzeff faces a number of charges, including two counts sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching under 16, five counts of assault and mischief under $5,000. He also faces a charge of breach of recognizance.
The long-serving lawyer is a prominent figure in Thunder Bay's legal community and most recently made headlines for his work in a class-action lawsuit against the RCMP.
The charges he now faces were first brought to court Nov. 21 following an arrest by the Thunder Bay Police Service.
A Sault Ste. Marie Crown attorney was to be brought in to handle the case but during a Friday morning bail hearing the out-of-town Crown attorney was excused from the case, citing the conflict of interest has been resolved.
Zaitzeff is being defended by a lawyer from Toronto.
None of the charges he faces have been proven in court.
