Balmoral Street crash sends three to hospital

Three people were taken to hospital Monday after a serious crash at the intersection of Balmoral and William Streets.

Three people were taken to hospital Monday after a serious crash at the intersection of Balmoral and William Streets.

The crash took place after an eastbound car being operated by an elderly man was struck by a semi-tractor as it entered the intersection.

The northbound transport then spun into a pickup truck in the southbound lane, forcing it into the ditch.

The driver of the pickup was pinned inside his vehicle and had to be removed with the Jaws of Life. He was taken to hospital with a leg injury and suspected internal injuries.

The driver and passenger of the car were also taken to hospital with chest pains and head injuries.

Thunder Bay Police Service traffic Sgt. Glenn Porter said the incident should raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.

There is no word yet on the condition of those who were taken to hospital.

The crash resulted in traffic delays at the intersection for several hours.
