THUNDER BAY — Seven years after the City of Thunder Bay announced plans to rebuild Balmoral Street, a contract is expected to be awarded soon for the final stage of the project.
When the rebuild of the high-traffic arterial road started in 2016, it was initially expected to take three years to finish, but there have been various delays.
The stretch between the McIntyre River and Alloy Drive is already done.
The city is now requesting bids from contractors interested in completing the last phase, between Alloy Drive and Beverly Street.
The section from Alloy to Central Avenue was originally scheduled to be done in 2021, but it was postponed until this year for budget reasons.
Work to be done by the successful bidder includes earth excavation and grading, asphalt removal and paving, asphalt multi-use trails, streetlighting, curb and gutter construction, and storm sewer installation.
Similar to what's been done on other sections, artificial turf will be installed between the curbs and sidewalks.
The project also includes the reconstruction of the intersection at Central Avenue.
City officials will hold a meeting with interested bidders in the parking lot of the police station on April 7.
