DRYDEN, ON — Police in Dryden are crediting the alertness of staff at a local bank for catching a scam before any damage was done.

On Oct. 19, a 78-year-old Dryden resident answered the phone and was told they had won a lottery prize.

The caller advised the person to go to the bank and forward $1,000 in order to initiate collection of their winnings.

At the bank, staff recognized that their client was about to be victimized by a fraud.

They told the individual what was going on, with the result that the money transfer was stopped.

The Dryden Police Service says older citizens are often preyed upon by fraudsters, and that this kind of phone call should always be reported to police or to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
