THUNDER BAY  The Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to smoke in the basement of a bungalow on Royal Street overnight on Saturday

Before the arrival of the fire department at 12:28 a.m., occupants of the home were able to exit without incident, according to a media release issued by the fire department on Sunday morning.

When the first fire crew arrived and encountered smoke in the basement, the fire department said water was applied to extinguish the fire and ventilation was used to remove smoke from the building.

A search of the premises also confirmed that no one else was home at the time of the incident, added the fire department.

A total of six pumpers, an aerial ladder and the command vehicle were used to respond to the incident.

The fire department reminds the public that working smoke detectors and a regularly practiced fire escape plan are essential to ensuring the safety of their family in the event of a fire at home.
