THUNDER AY -- Inclement weather across Ontario has prompted the Ministry of Community and Social Services to extend the deadline for registration for the Ontario Basic Income project.

Monday, April 16 was the original target date for completing applications.

Citing the impact of freezing rain and snow in much of the province, the ministry announced that it was extending the deadline to Thursday, April 19. It said new enrollment sessions would be posted online at ONTARIO.ca/basicincome.

It said people who feel they may be eligible may also request an application by email (basicincome@ontario.ca) or sign up for an enrollment session by phone at 1-844-217-4516.

When the government announced the project about a year ago, it said it would be looking for 1,000 participants in the Thunder Bay area, and 4,000 across the province.

As of early last month, officials said they had not yet reached all targets, but declined to reveal the current enrollment totals.

Eligible participants receive a basic income of up to $16,989 a year for a single person and up to $24,027 per year for a couple, less 50 per cent of any earned income.
