THUNDER BAY -- The Bay Street Film Festival is broadening its horizons.

Organizers are taking on the world of 360-degree video and they are doing it without headsets.

Watching 360 video usually comes with the issue of isolation, as only one person can enjoy the film at a time, but an array of five projectors and a carousel of draped screens are changing that.

Bay Street Film Festival technical coordinator Riaz Mehmood said they wanted the 360-degree video experience to be communal.

“We thought of having the 360 experience not on headsets like oculus or some other headset, but having it as a communal experience,” Mehmood said.

“Similar to being with your friends in a cinema experience, so that was our aim.”

On top of the video changes, the location has changed as well.

The Bay Street Film Festival has relocated from the Finlandia Club, and now resides at Trinity Hall.

Festival coordinator Dennis Dubinsky said the move to Trinity Hall was quite recent.

“We are no longer on Bay Street, so we will be coming up with a new name for the Bay Street Film Festival and that’s in the works right now,” Dubinsky said.

“You will have to keep an eye out for that in the near future.”

The next Film Festival will be held in September.

Organizers are hoping this project and the new larger space will open the festival up to full-length 360 degree videos, and even offer the option of being able to show virtual reality features.
