The bear that attacked a man on two separate occasions at Sandbar Lake Provincial Park in Ignace has been destroyed.

Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources spokeswoman Jolanta Kowalski says its rare to see a bear demonstrate this kind of behaviour.

“It is unusually as the bear seemed to be exhibiting predatory characteristics, which is a case of stalking something,” Kowalski said. “It was very focused on its prey, whether it was the dogs or the person.”

The attack originally occurred Saturday. The bear was shot on Sunday and caught in a live trap Monday. The animal was then taken to a veterinarian to be “dispatched,” Kowalski explained during an interview with CKPR Radio Tuesday.

The park trails around Sandbar Lake Provincial Park remain closed as the investigation into the incident continues.

The park is otherwise operating normally.
