Day 1 of the Thunder Bay Blues Festival went off without a hitch, and with one of the biggest opening day crowds in the 10-year history of the summertime staple.
A little local flavour kicked off the afternoon, with John Booth and the Southside Band opening the festival, followed in no short order by the stylings of the Michael Abraham trio and the always popular Tracy K. and Jamie Steinhoff to wash away the post-supper blues.
As afternoon faded away into evening Les Dudek hopped on stage and wowed from start to finish. Not to be outdone, Canadian blues guitarist Tony Springer, the T behind Wild T and the Spirit, let loose with a blistering set of blues, slipping in a little Hendrix and Neil Young for good measure.
American rockers Grand Funk Railroad finished the night, the crowd on their feet eagerly anticipating, and then singing along with, classic rock staples Some Kind of Wonderful and We’re an American Band, which sent the Thunder Bay faithful home with a pleasant taste in their mouths.
It only gets better on Saturday, when Buddy Guy headlines, Big Walter Smith makes his 10th appearance on the main stage and Dana Fuchs threatens to win over a new legion of fans who won’t be able to resist the charm of her southern blues repertoire.
The music begins at noon, starting with local favourites Midnight, featuring the vocals of Steve Herman.
