THUNDER BAY — The City of Thunder Bay is reminding local cyclists and motorists that the city’s bike lane network will be “closed” as of Tuesday.
While cyclists can continue using the lanes, as well as roadways, the city does not maintain them between Nov. 15 and April 30, meaning they’re not cleared of debris and can be used for snow storage as necessary.
In some locations, rules against on-street parking in bike lanes are also lifted during the winter season. The city directs drivers to check parking signs to confirm if bike lane parking is permitted.
The city’s mobility coordinator, Darrik Smith, urged cyclists and drivers alike to pay close attention to safety as the days get shorter and fewer cyclists are on the road.
“All riders choosing to use bike lanes and roadways during the winter are advised to exercise caution, and all road users are reminded to share the road, be aware of other vehicles and be courteous,” he said in a statement.
Smith encouraged cyclists to use lights, wear reflective clothing, and use hand signals to communicate to drivers.
Likewise, the city asks drivers to slow down, provide bikes with a safe distance, and avoid driving in bike lanes.
The city will reopen bike lanes on May 1 of next year, weather permitting.
