Police have more questions than answers about a break-in at a South side government building Tuesday evening that brought charges against one man so far.

Police received a call to the provincial government building at 435 James Street South Tuesday after people saw men in the building destroying property.

“When they looked up and saw these people kicking at the window they sort of thought that was bizarre behavior and continued to watch and saw some furniture being thrown so they thought it was a good time to call the police,” said Thunder Bay Police Service’s Cst. Julie Tilbury.

A perimeter was set up around the building once police arrived. They found 29-year-old Jason William Halvorsen hiding outside of the building. He has been charged with break-and-enter with intent to cause mischief. Police have not been able to find anyone else involved in the incident so far Tilbury said. As for how Halvorsen and others got into the building and what their intent was, she said the police are still investigating. It is still unclear how many people were involved.

“At this point we don’t have any further information because our criminal investigation branch is continuing to follow up this investigation,” she said.

Tilbury said there is substantial damage to things like televisions, furniture and windows in the Ministry of Community and Social Services offices totaling more than $10,000.

The investigation continues.
