THUNDER BAY - A Black Lives Matter protest is being planned in the city of Thunder Bay.

The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, June 5 at 3 p.m. at Waverley Park and comes after nearly a week of protests, sometimes violent, in the United States after the death of African American man George Floyd, who died last Monday when a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for nine minutes. Protests have erupted across the United States and into Canada and Europe.

“After everything I’ve been seeing, hearing, and crying about, I think Thunder Bay needs to protest,” one of the event organizers shared on Facebook.

“This is bigger than any of us now, racism is at an all time high against the black community. They are tired. They are so so tired. We need to raise our voice and use our privilege the right way.”

More than 430 people on the Facebook event page have expressed interest in participating.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.
