LONDON, Ont. -- Spencer Blackwell three-goal performance proved to be the difference as Lakehead won it's second straight as the team gets set to hit the Christmas break after one more outing.

Blackwell scored once in each period against the Mustangs, giving him five goals on the season. More importantly, Lakehead improved to 8-5-2 and are now tied for fourth place in the OUA West with the Brock Badgers, who do hold two games in hand. The top six teams make the post-season in each conference.

Jack Tucker opened the scoring for Western, beating Max Wright at 13:52 of the first, but Blackwell responded with 38 seconds to go in the opening stanza, beating Mustangs goaltender Dylan Myskiw to even the match 1-1.

Blackwell scored again 32 seconds into the second, but the Mustangs found even ground again at the 12:20 mark when Franco Sproviero found the back of the LU net. Griffen Fox gave LU the lead for good 46 seconds later and the T-Wolves took a 3-2 lead into the intermission.

Kyle Auger and Greg Smith, with his second in two games, upped the LU lead to 5-2 in the third. Sean Montgomery closed the gap to two on the power-play, but Blackwell hit the empty net in the final minute of regulation to restore the three-goal edge, Lakehead winning the contest 6-3.

Lakehead and Wester (3-7-5) meet again on Saturday at 3 p.m.
