THUNDER BAY – A Montgomery Street home sustained significant damage after a blaze broke out in the kitchen area early Tuesday evening.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews were called to the home around 6 p.m. after a neighbour reported seeing flames through a kitchen window.
Platoon chief Shawn Merrifield said there was heavy smoke coming from the structure when the first crews arrived on the scene. There were also flames visibly engulfing parts of the roof.
“They attacked from the outside and knocked a fair amount of fire down,” Merrifield said. “Once they were able to open a door they went inside and extinguished the fire which started in the kitchen area.”
Nobody was injured and the occupant was not home at the time of the fire, he added.
While he had not been inside, Merrifield said communication from crews indicates the home sustained “heavy damage.”
“We had to disconnect the electricity and we shut the natural gas down so the home is unoccupiable at this time,” Merrifield said.
Merrifield said the cause of the fire is undetermined. The department’s investigations team will conduct a further probe.
