THUNDER BAY – Environment Canada has issued a blizzard warning for the Thunder Bay area, with snowfall expected to combine with wind gusts of 70 to 80 km/h starting Friday afternoon and lasting into Saturday.
The agency advised residents to avoid travel if possible during that time, warning of dangerous conditions.
Strong northwest winds and blizzard conditions were projected to develop late Friday afternoon and continue until Saturday afternoon.
Winds are expected to remain strong through Saturday, while snow is expected to taper off by Saturday afternoon, Environment Canada said, with “extensive blowing snow” likely continuing into that night.
“Travel is expected to be very difficult or impossible due to near-zero visibility,” the agency stated. “Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Road closures are possible.”
The area was expected to receive 20 to 40 centimetres of snow between Thursday and Friday. Environment Canada projected just another 2 centimetres of snowfall on Saturday.
