THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has issued an advisory about the discovery of blue-green algae at Two Island Lake.

The lake is located in Jacques Township, about 20 km north of Thunder Bay.

According to the TBDHU, the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks collected a water sample on June 29 and conducted a toxin analysis.

Toxins were not present in concentrations that would affect human health.

However, the TBDHU said in a news release Monday that it's important to note that water should be avoided whenever a blue-green algae bloom is present, and for about two weeks after it has dissipated.

The health unit said this is regardless of the results of toxin analysis, because blue-green algae can turn toxin production on and off in response to environmental conditions.

In mid-June, blue-green algae was also discovered at Hazelwood Lake near Thunder Bay, but subsequent lab analysis found toxins were below the Ontario drinking water standard.
