Blue-green algae has been found at Shelter Bay on Lower Shebandowan Lake, health authorities announced Friday.
The microscopic organisms were confirmed to be present in a water sample taken at the bay on Aug. 9, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit warned in an advisory issued Friday.
Water should be avoided whenever a blue-green algae bloom is present, and for about two weeks after it has dissipated, cautions the TBDHU.
Blue-green algae blooms, which can make water resemble green pea soup or turquoise paint, can contain toxins that pose health risks to people and animals when consumed, or even from skin contact.
The blooms have been relatively rare in the region historically, but a warming climate may be making them more common, the health unit says.
Lower Shebandowan Lake is located roughly 100 kilometres west of Thunder Bay.
Suspected blue-green algae blooms can be reported to the provincial Spills Action Centre at 1-800-268-6060. Residents can also contact the Thunder Bay District Health Unit at 807-625-5900 to speak with a public health inspector.
