THUNDER BAY – A pair of boaters who struck an object in the water near Mission Marsh had to be rescued by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.

The incident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to a release issued by the fire department, the two individuals onboard the small pleasure craft were unable to overcome offshore wind with paddles, with their engine disabled, and were being blown a considerable distance into the open lake.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue dispatched two vessels, a Zodiac and a Harbour Rescue Vessel, one from Marina Park, the other directly from Mission Island.

The boat in question was quickly located and it was confirmed neither boater was injured. The Coast Guard was then contacted to tow the vessel.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds the public to be cautious when out on Lake Superior, to know the weather conditions and to ensure that equipment is in good working order. Life jackets are also recommended.
