THUNDER BAY -- Provincial police have recovered the body of a missing kayaker from Lake Superior along the Sleeping Giant Peninsula shoreline.

According to an Ontario Provincial Police release, a 57-year-old who was camping alone in a remote area of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park was reported missing on Wednesday, June 8 around 11 a.m. by park staff after their vehicle permit expired.

Police say the person was last seen by campers on Monday, June 6.

Thunder Bay OPP investigated the incident.

The person was camping in a remote area near Tee Harbour, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park and all personal belongings were located at their campsite except for a kayak.

The Ministry of Natural Resources helicopter, two Thunder Bay OPP Emergency Response Team members, the Joint Rescue Coordination Center and the Canadian Coast Guard searched the shoreline and neighbouring islands to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park.On June 8, shortly after 3:30 p.m., Thunder Bay OPP ERT members located a kayak and missing person, Alexander Hay, 57, of Ottawa deceased in Lake Superior along the Sleeping Giant Peninsula shoreline.

No foul play is suspected.
