Bonot, Johnston to meet for Northern Ontario mixed title

Winner to represent Northern Ontario at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship next month in Canmore, Alta.

THUNDER BAY -- A Thunder Bay rink is headed to the 2021 Canadian mixed curling championship.

Which rink will be decided on Sunday.

Former Canadian champion Trevor Bonot's foursome, which includes lead Amanda Gates, second Mike McCarville and third Jackie McCormick, needed an extra end on Saturday night to edge Abby Deschene's foursome 7-6, to finish round-robin play at 4-0.

Dechene had to settle for a 2-2 finish.

In the other match of the night, Johnston took the lead in the seventh and stole an insurance point in the eighth to nudge fellow Thunder Bay skip Kory Carr 4-2 to earn the other championship game spot, finishing with a 3-1 record. Johnston's team also includes lead Marcy Berry, second Chris Briand and third Laura Forget.

Carr, who won the Canadian mixed title in 2017 playing with Bonot, finished the Port Arthur Curling Club competition at 2-2.

The Canadian Mixed Curling Championship gets under way on Nov. 7 in Canmore, Alta.
