THUNDER BAY – There will be at least one familiar face in the Thunder Bay Border Cats lineup next season.

Canadian Jakob Newton, who led the Cats in hits, runs scored and stolen bases, while reaching base safely in 41 straight games, has agreed to return to the Northwoods League club for a second season.

Newton, who was second among Border Cats regulars with a .292 average, will also be reunited with manager Mike Steed, who he played for with the Ontario Blue Jays junior baseball program.

The team says it has 26 players in total under contract, but have only made public a handful at this point in time.

The Cats open their 18th season on May 26 at home against Eau Claire.
