THUNDER BAY – The Border Cats sent the fans home happy for the winter.
Playing their home finale on Thursday night, the Cats brought some in-game fireworks to Port Arthur Stadium, prepping the season-high crowd of 2,416 for the post-game show that’s become an end-of-season tradition.
Thunder Bay scored four times in the third and added five more in the seventh, downing Duluth 11-2, the sixth straight time they beat the Huskies at home and the eighth time in 10 games this season they took down their playoff-bound opponent.
The Border Cats needed just six hits to put up 11 runs against the Huskies, helped out by a pair of Huskies errors on the night.
Kaiden Ashton, Corey Morro and Duncan Key each had a pair of RBI for Thunder Bay, who improved to 18-16 in the second half.
Braden Gluth gave the Border Cats seven strong innings on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out 10 to improve his record to 3-1.
Duluth’s Brode Gann took the loss, giving up two runs on three hits over two innings as the Huskies try to align their starting rotation for the first round of the playoffs and the first-half champion La Crosse Loggers. The postseason begins on Sunday.
Overall, Thunder Bay is 39-29, second best in the Great Plains East.
