WATERLOO, Iowa – The Waterloo Bucks built a five-run lead Monday night over the Thunder Bay Border Cats, but needed to hang on for a one-run win.
The visiting Border Cats scored four times in the top of the ninth, but Shane Shepard struck out swinging with the tying run on base as Thunder Bay went down 7-6, their second straight defeat.
Catcher Luke Horanski singled and scored twice for Thunder Bay (13-19).
Cameron Churchill was roughed up for six runs in five innings of work, the Bucks scoring thre times in the first and adding three more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.
Adam McGinnis belted a bases-clearing double in the first, after Churchill allowed the first three batters he faced to reach.
Alex Boxwell homered with one aboard in the fourth, his third of the season.
Patrick Boyle threw seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball to pick up the win, improving to 5-2. Derek Hendrixon earned his sixth save, retiring Shepard after Brandon Downey gave up four in the
