THUNDER BAY – The Canada-United States border will be closed to non-essential traffic for 30 days longer than originally planned.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday confirmed he and U.S. President Donald Trump have decided to extend the temporary closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two countries initially closed the border on March 21 for a month.

“This is an important decision, and one that will keep people on both sides of the border safe,” Trudeau said.

Trump, whose country has the most COVID-19 cases in the world, with more than 735,000, and the most deaths, at more than 38,500, earlier this week said he was hopeful the border could open soon.
