THUNDER BAY – Former mayor Ken Boshcoff is taking over the helm at the Staal Foundation Open as tournament director.

Organizers of the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada event made the announcement in a release issued on Tuesday morning, saying Boshcoff has been a volunteer at the tournament since Day 1.

Boshcoff said he hopes to continue the good work spearheaded by founding tournament director Scott Smith.

“Being able to continue on the success of the event and ensure its longevity supports the mandate of our board, the Staal Family and the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada. I look forward to working with all of the partners, supporters, volunteers and community members throughout the coming months as we prepare for an exciting 2018 event.”

Last year the event raised $271,500 for local charities and should top the $1-million mark in 2018.

Boshcoff praised Smith’s efforts.

“The event would not be where it is today without Scott’s outstanding leadership and drive. He truly embodied the organization’s mission of promoting the community, growing the sport of golf in Thunder Bay, contributing awareness and funds to local charities, and creating a fun and rewarding environment for all involved,” said Boshcoff.

Organizers added the board of directors will take on a larger responsibility this year, after a year of mentorship. Directors include Brian Campbell, Sean Davies, Walter Flasza, Greg Jarvis, Johanna Maki and Gloria Sherban.
