THUNDER BAY — Former mayor and Liberal MP Ken Boshcoff is sticking to the sidelines in the 2018 municipal election.
Boshcoff, tournament director of the Staal Foundation Open, says he’s decided not to run for mayor, despite plenty of encouragement.
“We are all aware that our city needs a person of experience, balance, integrity and commitment,” Boshcoff said in a Facebook post released on Saturday morning.
“It is not a job for anyone who does not have a long proven record in governance, leadership or decision-making. Knowing those criteria I’m certain someone will come forward.”
Boshcoff finished second to Keith Hobbs in the 2014 mayor’s race and served two terms as mayor from 1997 to 2003 before moving into the federal political realm and two terms with the Liberals.
He cited health concerns as one reason for not entering this year’s municipal race, promising he’ll stay involved in the community regardless.
“You know I greatly appreciate your friendship and support and I look forward to working with you on community causes in the future.”
Eight candidates have already filed to run for mayor, including Iain Angus, Frank Pullia, Larry Hebert, Shane Judge, Kevin Cernjul, Jim Gamble, Mariann Sawicki and Ronald Chookomolin.
