Demolition of a long-standing Thunder Bay restaurant is now underway to make room for a new drugstore.

The Port Arthur Brasserie and Brew Pub was a staple on Red River Road for several decades, before shutting down in 2008. The property also included an attached pharmacy for the past eight years.

The former Shoppers Drug Mart included a walk-in clinic, which has since been re-located to a facility near the hospital.

The building is being torn down to allow for the construction of a much larger, 24-hour Shoppers Drug Mart.

The 19,000-square foot store will also feature a walk-in clinic and other retail space, and it's expected to be complete in early 2012.

This will be the fifth new Shoppers to be built in the city in the past five years.
