THUNDER BAY -- The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says the number of brush fires so far this year is slightly more than normal.

Fortunately, the larger trees are not dry enough yet for the fires to grow into larger scale forest fires.

This past week saw a major brush fire along the Trans-Canada Highway in Pearl and there have also been numerous grass fires in and around Thunder Bay over the past three weeks.

MNR fire operations technician Rod Harnett says many of the fires they have been seeing so far this year are because of carelessness and with the dry conditions we have been having lately, people need to follow the safe burning regulations.

Harnett says it's important to also check with your municipality, as each town has its own set of fire regulations.
