Bus driver assaulted

THUNDER BAY -- A 56-year-old man has been charged after assaulting a bus driver late Wednesday night.

According to Thunder Bay Police, officers were dispatched to the area of Junot Avenue and Windsor Street around 7:20 p.m. after receiving a report of an assault on a bus driver.

When officers arrived they spoke to the 31-year-old driver who told police that an intoxicated man got on the bus and demanded a free ride.

The driver refused and the 56-year-old man struck him with a bottle in a bag.

The driver managed to get the man off the bus for the safety of the passengers.

Officers located the suspect in the 200 block of Windsor Street and arrested him.

Bryant Shapwaykeesic appeared in court Thursday morning on charges of assault with a weapon and breach of probation.

He was remanded into custody.
