THUNDER BAY – Members of the public helped apprehend suspect who attempted to rob Maltese Grocery.

Police, in a release issued on Friday, say a 73-year-old man was attempting to pay for his purchase at 12:50 p.m. on Thursday when a 26-year-old male entered the popular butcher and grabbed at the man’s wallet. A struggle ensued and bystanders came to assist and subdue the suspect.

He was then released and ran southbound on Algoma Street, but staff from the store followed the suspect and identified him to police when they arrived on scene. He was arrested at the corner of Algoma and Ambrose streets.

Jeff Calvin Sharp, 26, was charged with robbery, has made a first appearance in court and has been remanded into custody.

No one was hurt in the incident.
