WINNIPEG – Thunder Bay golfer Barry Caland has earned a spot at the Canadian Senior Men’s Golf Championship.

Caland, 54, fired a seven-over 78 on Wednesday to finish seventh overall at the Manitoba senior men’s golf championship at the Glendale Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg, 13 shots off the pace set by Niakwa Country Club’s Todd Fanning.

Caland entered the final round tied for third place.

A rough first nine on Wednesday cost him a chance for a better finish, with bogeys on the second, fourth and sixth holes, before double-bogeying the par-five eighth.

He birdied the par-three 16th.

Kenora’s Bill Isfeld finished 23 shots behind Fanning, after closing with a seven-over 79 in Round 3 of the 54-event.

Kenora’s John Francom was 66th, finishing with a 67-over 283 total.

Rhonda Orr of the Southwood Golf and Country Club won the women’s championship by 20 strokes over Cathy Derewianchuck of the host club, finishing with a 19-over 235 total.

Caland will compete at the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, being held from Sept. 9 to 12 at Kenwo Golf Club in New Minas, N.S.
