Camp Quality spirit dry despite recent rain

The recent rain hasn’t dampened the spirits campers and counsellor at this summer’s Camp Quality. “This year has been really remarkable,” said camp director Gladys Berringer.

The recent rain hasn’t dampened the spirits campers and counsellor at this summer’s Camp Quality.

“This year has been really remarkable,” said camp director Gladys Berringer.

This summer is the 12th year the summer camp program for children with cancer and their siblings has run at Camp Duncan at East Loon Lake. On Wednesday the campers stopped at the Terry Fox Lookout for a photo before continuing on for a day of bowling and swimming in the city.

The weeklong program is a time for kids to come together and have fun, said Berringer.

“It gives everyone an opportunity to forget about cancer and just to have fun, enjoy being kids and all the fun things camping can do for that,” she said.

There are 19 campers this year and the theme is Everything Disney. Berringer said she saw quick bonding between the campers Tuesday during some team activities.

“We’ve got new campers and volunteers this year that have quickly become part of our CQ family,” Berringer said.

This year is 14-year-old Lyndon’s first time spending the week with Camp Quality and said not only is he having fun, but he’s also learning about the different types of cancer.

“I’m actually surprised there’s this many types of cancer. I survived it once already and I know there’s still people out there. I’m happy I’m here,” he said.

The support from other campers is also appreciated.

“It makes me excited actually because they are all supporting you in a different way. I know I gave away my guardian angel to somebody else because I had their back when they had cancer,” said Lyndon.
