THUNDER BAY — Maintenance work will force the closure of the Canada Games Complex pool for three weeks in September.
The pool will shut down on Sept. 2 to allow City of Thunder Bay staff to drain it for cleaning and inspection.
A contractor then will apply new grout to areas that require it and remove and replace any damaged tile.
The closure will last through Sept. 22.
Mike Carlucci, the supervisor of aquatic operations at the CGC, says the last time this happened was three years ago.
"The pool gets drained every few years. That's industry practice...we clean the entire basin and we assess. Usually what happens is that it's just grouting that's done for the most part," Carlucci said Monday.
The city estimates that a maximum of 3000 square feet including the main pool, swirl pool, pool deck and possibly change room areas will require new epoxy grout.
Carlucci said the hot tub and saunas, which are situated on the pool deck, will be shut down for one week only.
However, activities at the complex that are unrelated to the pool area will continue normally all through September, including fitness classes and the weight rooms.
According to city records, an average of 4,310 users per week visited the Canada Games Complex in September 2018.
