THUNDER BAY —The City of Thunder Bay closed part of the Canada Games Complex for several hours Tuesday due to smoke from forest fires in Northwestern Ontario and Western Canada.

Both the pool and track were placed off-limits in the morning because of deteriorated air quality in the pool area.

At 11:30 a.m., the facilities were reopened after conditions improved.

A post on the Canada Games Complex social media site advised those more likely to be impacted by smoke – such as seniors, individuals who are pregnant, smokers, young children, and people with a chronic health condition – to avoid strenuous activities at this time.

It said the swirl pool (tot pool) would remain closed for the remainder of the day.

The post also recommended users exercise their own judgment while using the Complex, consider alternate locations off the track area, and take care to take extra breaks and stay hydrated.

Lessons scheduled for Tuesday evening were expected to be take place as usual.
